Meet Your Instructor

Hello. My name is Joe Porten. I'm a 33-year IT veteran who spent my entire career at Sallie Mae as a developer, manager, and director. I live in Speedway, Indiana.

Having spent 18 years managing scores of IT professionals on many different teams, I was always passionate about coaching people and helping them grow at the professional level.

My final 3 years with Sallie Mae were spent leading their talent development initiatives across all of IT. It was during this time I built and led new hire onboarding initiatives. This provided the spark for me to carry on this important work today.

After retiring at 55 in April 2025, I realized I still have much to give—so Tech Careers Enablement was born along with my flagship program Onboard Accelerator.

I am forever grateful to the wonderful people at Sallie Mae who were instrumental in teaching, guiding, and challenging me to be the best version of myself.
